So my suggestion is that each weapon type has a set attribute associated with it as a baseline. For example swords always have a higher damage, axes add + health, shears add +speed, hoe gives more mana regen, blazerod fire aspect, spade featherfall, so on and so forth. Then open up at least 2 weapon options per class that do the same damage. 
This would allow people to have even more customization.
