Mob Spawners: What is Allowed?

For anyone who isn't a crafter, the only way to gain experience once choosing a specific class is by killing monsters. The only way to effectively do this in order to receive a steady income of experience is by using mob-spawners, but the rules on what is and is not allowed are somewhat hazy. I haven't been able to find a set of clearly defined guidelines anywhere, leaving me with ingame chatter as my only source of information regarding this matter. If there is a thread somewhere or a page on the wiki, please point me in the right direction. If not, I suggest we do something about establishing one on both the wiki and forums so that we will have a truly thorough understanding of what is permissible.

So far, I know that anything intended to harm the mob once spawning (fall damage, cactus, lava, etc.) isn't allowed, and rooms leading away from the spawner to such traps are also not allowed. There are to be no barriers between the player and the spawned monsters, and the mobs should be able to hit the players attacking them with as much ease as if they were fighting each other on the surface.

I'm sure there's more that isn't allowed, and I'm sure I'll probably be punished for using a mob-spawner in a way that I didn't know was illegal. Until there is an official source of information regarding the legality of spawner usage, I will have trouble knowing what I can and can't do to gain experience in the server.

you may not sit afk grinding mobs
you cannot block off the mobs path to you
the mob must be able to hit you with arrows/melee
the mobs cannot fall from a distance to take damage before fighting you.

Use common sense.

The rules are very clear - dont exploit the system.
